So many of us think of “boating” as just a warm-weather activity. Our experience with being on the water is limited to hot sunshine, warm water, and maybe a cool breeze. However, for many, winter boating is what it’s all about. Bundling family and friends up in warm (but not too warm) clothes, and heading out on the water to take in the austere beauty of stillness that winter can provide can make the sort of holiday memories that last forever. Our vessel documentation center has some tips to keep you and yours safe on the water in the winter of 2021 and beyond.
Vessel Documentation Center
You always check your vessel entirely before heading out on the water. It’s even more important during the winter. After all, should something happen, odds are that there will be fewer people on the water who may be able to assist. To that end, it’s possible that your local marine gas station has fewer hours, so making sure your gas is full before you head out is imperative. You want to check the oil, too. Batteries can drain much faster in the winter than in the summer, as well.
The Right Layering
We don’t have to tell you to dress warmly when you go out on the water in the winter. However, you want to dress warmly the right way. Specifically: layers. Dressing in multiple layers can ensure that you’re ready for whatever may come. Perhaps the cold breeze slows and the sun comes out from behind the clouds. You may consider taking the topmost layer off. Or, alternatively, the wind could pick up, bringing sleet with it. In that case, you might even put another layer back on. No matter what, make sure that your lifejacket can fit over all of your layers. “Dress for the water, not the air” is a cliche because it’s true.
A Proper Celebration
Going out on your vessel with the people you care about, no matter what time of year it is should be fun. It’s certainly tempting during this time to bring some adult beverages with you. Never should anyone who’s operating the vessel partake in those. By that same token, the water in winter can be that much colder and harsher on the body, so be careful about having a drink even if you aren’t operating the vessel.
